Historic Environment Scotland

Historic Environment Scotland is the lead public body established in 2015 to investigate, care for and promote Scotland’s historic environment. We are responsible for managing over 300 properties and visitor attractions, including Edinburgh Castle.

We have internationally significant collections including over five million drawings, photographs, negatives and manuscripts and over twenty million aerial images of worldwide locations.

We award grants to support building repairs, ancient monuments, excavations, the Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme, and the voluntary sector. Our conservation specialists provide guidance, training and technical research.

We survey and record Scotland’s buildings and archaeology, and provide educational activities and resources for learners of all ages to discover and explore their heritage.
